HIST6838 = Reading the Past: Advanced Historiography
This semester course introduces students to the development of the academic discipline of history. It focuses on different schools of thought and how they have approached studying the past. In the course, students will compare and contrast different historiographical approaches, examining key thinkers and texts that have shaped the historical discipline over time. We emphasise how historians are shaped by time and place and that all histories are borne out of particular contexts.
HIST6858 = Themes in Southern African History
This course gives students the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research on a particular topic in Southern African history, aligned with the module leader’s expertise. Over the course of the semester students will read deeply in a particular area and understand how different historical events or themes are interconnected.
HIST6868 = Themes in World History
This course gives students the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research on a particular topic in world history, aligned with the module leader’s expertise. Over the course of the semester, students will read deeply about a particular area and understand how different historical events or themes are interconnected.
HIST6808 = Research Report
Students are expected to write an independent research report of approximately 10,000 words. The project may be based on primary and/or secondary literature. A topic is selected in collaboration with the supervisor. The research report should have clear research questions and show a critical engagement with the sources.
